WebP files do not open in a lot of the software people rely on day to day — older image editors, Windows Explorer without codec packs, many CMS plugins, and various design tools simply do not know what to do with them. PNG is the escape hatch: universally readable, lossless, and supported everywhere for over two decades.

WebP files come in two varieties — lossless and lossy. If your source is lossless WebP, the PNG output is a perfect copy: not a single pixel value changes. If your source is lossy WebP, the PNG faithfully records the current pixel state, including any compression characteristics already present. PNG never introduces new loss, so whatever the WebP decoded to is exactly what gets frozen in the PNG container.
In both cases you end up with a file that is larger than the WebP source, which is the expected trade-off for lossless storage and guaranteed compatibility.
Both WebP and PNG support full alpha channels, so the conversion is transparent-area-safe. Semi-transparent edges, soft shadows, and logo cutouts arrive in the PNG exactly as they were in the WebP — no fill color, no white halos, nothing composited. This makes WebP-to-PNG a reliable path whenever you need to take a web-delivery asset back into a design tool for further editing or compositing.
PNG is a static format. If your WebP source is animated, the converter extracts the first frame and saves it as a still PNG. The remaining frames are not included. If you need all the frames from an animated WebP, consider exporting to GIF, which preserves the animation. Alternatively, if you need a specific non-first frame, a WebP frame extractor can isolate it before you upload here.
