WebP is efficient for modern browsers, but it runs into walls everywhere else: older photo editors, Windows Photo Viewer on unpatched systems, most email clients, print shop upload portals, and many mobile apps simply will not open it. JPG is the format that works without negotiation — on every device, in every decade of software, without any codec installed.
The converter handles both lossy and lossless WebP sources and packages results in a ZIP. Animated WebP sources are reduced to the first frame, since JPG is a still-image format.
JPG cannot store an alpha channel. When a WebP image contains transparency, those pixels must be filled with a solid color before the JPG is written. Enhydra RPO offers two choices: white and black. White is the right pick for images going into documents, email, or web pages with light backgrounds. Black suits images destined for dark interfaces or presentations.
The fill is applied only to transparent areas — fully opaque pixels in your WebP are unaffected. If you are unsure which to choose, white is the safer default for most print and office contexts.
Most WebP files on the web are already lossy-compressed. Encoding them to JPG applies a second round of lossy compression, which is inherently a quality trade-off. At the default high-quality setting, the visible difference is minimal for photographs. For archival purposes — if you intend to edit the image further — converting to PNG first and JPG last is the cleaner path. For social sharing, email, or quick compatibility fixes, direct WebP-to-JPG is perfectly practical.
JPG is a still-image format. If your WebP source contains an animation, only the first frame is extracted and converted to JPG. The remaining frames are discarded. If you need the animation preserved, use the WebP-to-GIF converter instead — that path keeps every frame with its timing intact.
Common cases: email clients (Outlook desktop, Apple Mail attachments), print labs, older Adobe Photoshop versions without the WebP plugin, Windows File Explorer on older systems, and social platforms that accept only JPG or PNG for profile images.
At the default quality setting, the difference is subtle on photographs. Re-encoding a lossy source adds a small amount of degradation, but for sharing or compatibility purposes it is rarely perceptible.
Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose — white or black. JPG cannot store transparency, so a fill color must be applied. Pick whichever matches the intended background.
