PNG is the right choice for working files and archives, but it is rarely the right choice for serving images on a website. WebP delivers file sizes roughly 25–35% smaller than a comparable PNG for the same perceived quality — and crucially, it carries the alpha channel intact. Logos, icons, UI graphics, and product cutouts with transparent backgrounds all convert cleanly, with no white fill applied.

Unlike JPG, WebP has full alpha-channel support. Fully transparent pixels, semi-transparent edges, and soft shadows all transfer from your PNG to the WebP output without modification. No background color is composited, and no fill is applied. This makes PNG-to-WebP the conversion of choice for any asset that needs to remain on a clear background at its destination — product cutouts, overlay graphics, watermarks, interface elements.
If you ever need a JPG from the same source, that is a separate conversion where background fill becomes relevant. For WebP output, it is not a concern.
