Nikon's NEF format stores the raw sensor output from your camera — 12 or 14 bits of data per channel, unsharpened, with the full latitude your sensor captured. That flexibility is invaluable for editing, but NEF files won't open in most apps and can't be shared directly. Converting to JPG is the standard handoff step: you get a universally compatible photo file without needing Nikon ViewNX or Capture NX installed.
LibRaw decodes the Nikon NEF sensor data using the camera's recorded white balance and standard demosaicing (the process of reconstructing full-color pixels from the sensor's Bayer grid). The output is a well-developed, accurate JPG — not a flat raw dump. What it doesn't do is apply Nikon's proprietary tone curves, Picture Control settings, or in-camera noise reduction. If you need those characteristics, developing in Lightroom or Capture NX gives you access to Nikon's color science specifically.
One common workflow: shoot RAW for editing flexibility, then batch-convert the selects to JPG for client delivery or quick review. Upload up to 200 NEF files, get a ZIP of developed JPGs. The batch runs server-side on libvips, so it completes faster than opening files one by one in desktop software. EXIF data is stripped by default — enable keep-metadata if the client needs shooting information embedded in the files.
Nikon cameras can save NEF in compressed, losslessly-compressed, or uncompressed modes depending on your settings. LibRaw handles all three. Compressed NEF files are smaller but contain the same sensor information; the development output is equivalent regardless of the NEF compression mode your camera used.
