Moving a JPG into a PNG container does not recover detail that lossy compression already removed — that data is gone. What you do gain is a lossless wrapper: from this point forward the file can be edited, resaved, and composited as many times as needed without accumulating any further quality loss.
The most common reasons to make this switch: you need to place the image in a design tool that treats PNG as its working format, you are stripping the background and need alpha-channel support, or you simply want a stable archive copy that won't degrade through repeated exports.
It is worth being direct: converting JPG to PNG does not sharpen the image, remove JPEG artifacts, or restore color accuracy.
