If you're pulling iPhone photos into a design workflow — compositing backgrounds, retouching in a layer-based editor, or archiving shots for further editing — PNG is often preferable to JPG because it introduces no further compression. Converting HEIC to PNG gives you a stable, lossless working file that won't degrade no matter how many times you open and save it.
JPG is smaller and suits final delivery. PNG suits editing. If your workflow involves cropping, color adjustment, or background removal after the conversion, start with PNG: every subsequent edit operates on lossless data, so you're not accumulating compression artifacts. Once the editing is complete, export the final version to JPG or WebP for sharing or publishing.
PNG also makes sense if the converted photo will be used as a layer in a design where color accuracy matters more than file size.
Modern iPhones shoot standard HEIC, HDR HEIC, and wide-color (Display P3) images. The converter reads all of these via LibRaw with camera white balance applied. The PNG output reflects the developed image accurately — the same data Apple's own preview shows — without requiring Apple software to decode the file first.
PNG files from iPhone photos will be substantially larger than the HEIC originals. A 5 MB HEIC can expand to 20+ MB as PNG. For a full trip's worth of photos, that's significant. If long-term archiving is the goal, consider whether lossless WebP or even TIFF better fits your storage constraints — both are available as output options. PNG is ideal when compatibility with editing software is the priority.
The PNG output is a lossless snapshot of the developed HEIC image. HEIC itself is compressed, so any compression already in the source is preserved — but the PNG-encoding step adds no new loss.
