DNG — Adobe's Digital Negative format — is unusual among RAW formats because it's both a vendor format and a universal container. Adobe created it as an open archival standard: some cameras (Leica, Pentax, Ricoh, many smartphones) shoot DNG natively, while other workflows use it as a conversion target from proprietary RAW formats. Whatever the source, converting DNG to JPG follows the same path: decode the sensor data, develop it, encode to JPG.
DNG files arrive from several places. Leica and Ricoh cameras produce native DNG. Adobe Lightroom can convert CR2, NEF, ARW, and others into DNG for archival. iOS's ProRAW feature produces DNG. Google Pixel cameras offer DNG output. LibRaw handles all of these, though Adobe's DNG format has evolved — some DNG features specific to Lightroom's conversion (like embedded JPEG previews and dual-pixel data) are used by LibRaw where applicable, while others are format internals not relevant to standard JPG output.
One reason photographers choose DNG for archiving is longevity: a camera manufacturer's proprietary RAW format depends on that manufacturer continuing to exist and maintain their software. DNG, being open and documented, is more likely to be decodable by software decades from now.
