Canon CR2 is the RAW format produced by Canon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras through the EOS line. RAW files contain unprocessed sensor data — maximum dynamic range, no baked-in sharpening or color processing — but they're essentially useless for sharing or uploading until developed into a standard format. Converting to JPG is the development step that makes your shots accessible.
The converter uses LibRaw — the same open-source RAW processing engine that powers many desktop converters — to decode the CR2 sensor data. Camera white balance from the CR2 metadata is applied automatically, so colors match what your Canon camera measured at the time of the shot. The resulting image is then encoded to JPG using mozjpeg-grade compression at your chosen quality setting.
This is not a replacement for a full raw processor like Lightroom or Capture One: you won't get tone curve adjustments or noise reduction here. It's a fast, accurate development pass for when you need shareable JPGs from a shoot quickly.
The batch option is the main reason to use a web tool for this. Upload up to 200 CR2 files from a shoot, set quality, and download the ZIP of JPGs. It's useful for delivering a first pass to a client, backing up a shoot in a shareable format, or culling a large selection before detailed editing. EXIF data — including shooting parameters and timestamps — is stripped by default but can be preserved with the keep-metadata option.
CR2 is Canon's older RAW format, used on EOS cameras up through roughly 2018. Newer Canon cameras (EOS R series and later Rebels) shoot CR3 instead. This tool specifically handles CR2. If your camera produces CR3 files, check whether the tool accepts them — CR3 support via LibRaw is more recent and may behave differently for some models.
