AVIF is excellent for web delivery but poorly supported in image-editing software and many desktop applications. If you need to take an AVIF file into Photoshop, Affinity Photo, or a tool that doesn't yet decode AVIF natively, converting to PNG is the most reliable path: you get a lossless, widely-compatible file that preserves any transparency the AVIF source carries.
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec, which requires more complex decoding hardware and software than JPEG or PNG. Browser vendors implemented it because web performance gains justified the engineering work, but desktop image editors, print workflows, and many CMS pipelines haven't followed at the same pace. As of mid-2024, Photoshop added AVIF support through a plugin, and Affinity Photo added it in version 2.x — but not all users keep software current.
PNG sidesteps all of this: it's been universally supported for over two decades.
The PNG faithfully captures the current pixel values from the AVIF — including any lossy-compression artifacts present in the source. PNG itself introduces no new loss: it wraps whatever the AVIF decoded to in a lossless container. The file will be considerably larger than the AVIF, which is the expected trade-off for lossless storage and universal compatibility.
The PNG is a lossless copy of the decoded AVIF, so it looks the same. Any compression characteristics already in the AVIF are frozen in place rather than amplified.
