AVIF is the most efficient image format available today, but its decoder is missing from a lot of the software people actually use day-to-day: older Photoshop versions, many Windows apps, and various web services. Converting to JPG trades some of AVIF's impressive compression for complete, guaranteed compatibility.
Chrome and Firefox have supported AVIF since 2021. Safari caught up in version 16 (2022). That covers the vast majority of current web traffic. The gap shows up in software, not browsers: image editors, CMS thumbnails, Windows File Explorer (without codec packs), and many mobile apps still don't decode AVIF reliably. If you're preparing images for software pipelines rather than web delivery, JPG is the safer output format.
AVIF supports full alpha transparency. JPG does not. Any transparent or semi-transparent areas in the AVIF source are flattened onto a solid fill color — white by default, configurable before converting. For product cutouts or graphics designed to overlay a colored background, set the fill to that background color for a clean result.
AVIF is better for web delivery, but JPG is better for software compatibility. If you need to open, edit, or share the image outside a browser, JPG reaches further.
AVIF is already lossy-compressed, so JPG encoding adds a second round of loss. At quality 85+, the difference is subtle. For archival purposes, prefer a lossless intermediate like PNG.
