What each control actually does to your pixels

Brightness adds or subtracts a uniform value from every pixel's luminance channel. Raising it lifts shadows and highlights together — useful for underexposed interiors or overcast outdoor work.

Contrast stretches or compresses the gap between shadows and highlights around the tonal midpoint. Increasing contrast makes an image feel crisper and more three-dimensional; decreasing it produces a faded, matte look that has become popular in editorial work.

Saturation controls the intensity of every color in the frame without touching luminance. Pull it back to take overcooked reds out of food photography; push it forward to make landscapes feel vivid after a gray day. Setting it to zero produces a clean grayscale conversion that respects the original luminance relationships.

Hue rotation shifts every color around the 360-degree color wheel by the same number of degrees. A small rotation — 10 to 20 degrees — is enough to correct a persistent color cast left by mixed lighting. Larger rotations create intentional palette shifts for creative or branding purposes.

FAQ

Does hue rotation affect neutral grays and whites?

Neutral tones have no saturation, so hue rotation has no visible effect on them. Only pixels with measurable color are shifted. Highlights and deep shadows stay neutral regardless of the rotation value you set.

Can I adjust brightness without blowing out highlights?

Brightness shifts the whole tonal range uniformly, so already-bright areas can clip if the value is pushed far. For fine tonal control, combining a modest brightness increase with a slight contrast reduction preserves more highlight detail.

Will I lose quality compared to editing in Lightroom or Photoshop?

Not in any measurable way. Adjustments are applied once during a single encode. There is no multi-generation quality loss, and the math used is the same channel arithmetic those desktop tools apply.

How do I test a setting before running the whole batch?
